Spring Gardening for Lawns

Core your lawns

Coring your lawn will help with getting water penetrating into your soil, and encouraging new roots to grow.

Apply a granular wetting agent to your lawn

The granules will fall into your lawn’s core holes. Now whenever you apply water, the jelly crystals will swell up and allow the grass roots access to water for longer. This also means you’ll save water too!

Top-dress your lawn

Top-dressing will not only give more even lawn surface, it will also help retain water longer. Apply Shirley’s No 17 and Dynamic Lifter for a healthy growing lawn.

Water in the morning or evening

During dry times, water your lawn lightly – in the early morning or in the evening – to minimise water evaporation. If you water your lawn through the heat of the day, you’ll be losing a lot of water to evaporation!

Spring Gardening Tips for Gardens

Plant Australian Natives

Plant natives like Grevillea Robyn Gordon, Grevillea Superb, Grevillea Moonlight, Grevillea Ned Kelly, Callistemon Hanna Rae, Callistemon Kings Park Special. Any Natives for full sun have good drought tolerance and as a bonus have bird-attracting flowers.

Even plants that require soil to be always moist can also be grown in drought conditions. Just plant in the correct sun aspect and apply wetting agent to prevent the soil from repelling water (this can happen when the soil dries out).

Mulch, mulch, mulch!

Mulching to 75 mm thick with an organic mulch to encourage worm activity will keep the soil cool in hot days AND help water to stay in the soil.

TIP #1

SCARIFY your lawns using a machine that you can hire, or you could just use a rake to remove all the dead leaf material and surface runners. If dead leaf material and surface runners are left on your lawn, it will become too thick and be less drought tolerant.

TIP #2

CORE your lawns using a machine which can be hired to take out plugs from grass, this allows new roots to grow and help water to soak in deeper. Fertilise with Shirley’s Number 17 and Dynamic Lifter, water in hourly to prevent leaf and root burn. Top dress your lawn for an even surface.

TIP #3

CUT BACK shrubs (not trees, because it will cause epicormic growth) by half on woody plants to encourage new growth. If hedges are too tall or too woody, cut back for new growth or desired hedge height.

Here’s an example of what can happen (epicormic growth) if you cut back trees too hard:
